Happy Mother’s Day, Sunday 19th March

Mother’s Day is an important day for me but not always an easy one. I love celebrating the fact that I’m lucky enough to be mum to an incredible young woman, who makes me grateful every single day that she’s my daughter (thank you, Scarlet!). But it’s also tinged with profound sadness at the loss of my own mum, which still feels raw and painful despite the passing of time. I know that many people who have lost parents will share this sentiment with me.

I’ll be holding onto the love this Mother’s Day and I urge all of you mothers - and children - out there to do the same. How you go about it is something only you can decide, but I would start by treating yourself to something special. This could take any form you want it to, from something as simple as breakfast in bed to a more indulgent, luxurious treat like a spa day, a special gift or lunch at a fancy restaurant. Or - if you’re anything like me this weekend - you might enjoy some of life’s more simple pleasures, like taking part in your favourite crafting activity or going for a walk in nature.

Do whatever makes you happy and fills you with love. For me, this will inevitably involve my daughter Scarlet, cake, crochet and probably an hour or more curled up with a few chapters of a good book. It will also definitely involve me not being on social media for a period of time or even the whole weekend!

I’m reminded of the famous quote from “The Importance of Being Earnest” by Oscar Wilde, which always makes me smile:

“All women turn into their mothers; that is their tragedy.”

That may be true, but perhaps, for some of us at least, it’s also our good fortune and our joy.

Happy Mother’s Day!
